What Is Boron?

Boron is an essential trace mineral found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes. Modern agricultural practices and low plant food consumption mean many people are significantly deficient — average Western intake is 1–3 mg/day, well below the 6–10 mg range where meaningful hormonal effects have been demonstrated.

It is one of the most underappreciated supplements in the hormonal optimisation space, with a particularly compelling evidence base for free testosterone and vitamin D activation.

The 2011 RCT

The landmark Naghii et al. study (2011) enrolled healthy male volunteers and gave them 10 mg/day of boron for just 7 days. Results were striking:

  • Free testosterone increased by 28.3% (from 11.83 to 15.18 pg/mL)
  • SHBG decreased by 9%
  • Oestradiol decreased by 39%
  • hsCRP fell by 87% (from 1.51 to 0.19 mg/dL)
  • TNF-α decreased by 45%

These are substantial effects for a 7-day intervention with a low-cost, safe trace mineral.

Vitamin D Synergy

Boron significantly extends the metabolic half-life of vitamin D and enhances its conversion to the active 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 form. For the large proportion of the population with suboptimal vitamin D status, adding boron can meaningfully improve vitamin D bioactivity without increasing dose.

Hormonal Stack

Boron works through SHBG reduction — different from Tongkat Ali (frees bound testosterone, lowers cortisol) and Fadogia Agrestis (LH stimulation). All three mechanisms are additive, making boron the third pillar of a comprehensive natural testosterone optimisation stack.
